We believe chocolate should be delicious and fun – an everyday, affordable luxury everyone should enjoy. Our philosophy, therefore, is quite simple: Eat more chocolate. Enjoy the chocolate. Then eat some more chocolate. We think you’ll be a happier person if you follow our approach.
Because of our love of chocolate, we don’t compromise on quality, we don’t compromise on ingredients,we don’t compromise on anything. In fact, we’re unrelenting in our drive for chocolate perfection. We set a high standard for our products and we meet it daily with fresh, handmade chocolates you have to taste to believe.
Many of our products are exclusives. You won’t find them anywhere else. And we’re always looking for new ways to put chocolate into your life or, to put it bluntly, into your mouth.

1947. Gayle Harte born in Detroit, Michigan. Genetics
reveal a passion for chocolate.
1947 – 1963. Gayle begins hanging out in kitchen with
mother and grandmother. She pays attention. Learns
about Austrian pastries.
1950. Gayle’s first culinary adventure: she makes
chocolate pudding from scratch . . . and doesn't share it.
1952 – 1970. Heavily influenced by taste bud-opening
experiences with Sander’s Hot Fudge Cream Puffs.
Constant concern: “Where’s my next cream puff coming
from?”
1964 – 1968. Attends the University of Michigan. Skips
classes frequently to cook for boyfriends. Receives a
Bachelor’s Degree and prepares to become an English
teacher.
1970s. Now married, Gayle is a stay-at-home mom of
two. Entertaining regularly, she gains a reputation for
exceptional dinner parties.
1978. Asked by a friend to make caramels for a party,
Gayle makes chocolate truffles instead.
1979. Gayle opens Gayle’s Chocolates in her second
kitchen in Huntington Woods, Michigan – a suburb of
Detroit. There’s no turning back now: English teacher
aspirations put on shelf.
1983. Gayle’s business grows. The City of Huntington
Woods asks her to move business from her residence
(disruptive to residential neighborhood’s ambiance).
1984. Gayle’s Chocolates opens in Royal Oak.
1986. Video Mix is introduced.
1989. Cocoa Cups, aka Haute Cocoa, find their way
onto the shelves at Gayle’s Chocolates.
1992. Java Jolts, Gayle's answer to the chocolate-
covered spoon, are introduced.
1996. Gayle involved in lawsuit with City of Royal Oak
over trash disposal. Suit resolved, Gayle introduces
Junk Food (packaged in a mini-trash can)in response.
2001. Gayle’s Chocolates opens in Detroit’s Metropolitan
International Airport.
2004. Gayles Chocolates celebrates 20 years in Royal
Oak and 25 years making chocolates.
