Our story is simple.
In 1979, Gayle Harte started Gayle's Chocolates with a clear and simple goal; make the best tasting chocolates possible and make them with creativity and imagination.
Gayle's intent has always been to recreate the magical taste of chocolates that she remembered as a child. Chocolates that were made in small batches daily with natural ingredients at neighborhood chocolate stores. There is a trend today called artisanal chocolates, but Gayle was making artisanal chocolates before it was even a trend.
Gayle's Chocolates began as a hobby at home that grew out of a love of cooking and eating. Originally operating out of her house in Huntington Woods, Michigan, Gayle was soon forced to move her operations to a commercial space.
In 1984, Gayle moved her business to 417 S. Washington in downtown Royal Oak, a suburb of Metro Detroit, that today remains the main center of operations. Along with handmade chocolates, Gayle brought Royal Oak its very first espresso bar – a step ahead of the other coffee shops and cafes in the area.
Gayle's philosophy has not changed over the years. All the recipes are the same as they were in 1979. As Gayle has said, "Everything is still made and packaged by hand. The only thing that has changed since 1979 is that now I have 25 pairs of hands helping me."
